Pope Francis grants Catholic priests the right to forgive women who have had abortions

Pope Francis has called on catholic priests to pardon women who have abortions and the doctors who perform them, during the upcoming Jubilee year. The Pope's statement overrules the Catholic Church's doctrine which frowns strongly against abortion.

In a message outlining special measures for the Jubilee year starting in December, Pope Francis said
"I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it.
The tragedy of abortion is experienced by some with a superficial awareness... many others... believe that they have no other option"he said
Pope Francis said he was "well aware of the pressure" that some women were under to abort, adding that he had "met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision".

Abortion is considered a particularly serious sin and is punishable under Canon law by excommunication, by which those guilty are expelled from the Church and considered to be condemned to Hell in the afterlife.

all forgiveness should be from God. Why should you give a priest the right to forgive? All this is complicating!

John 20:23
If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." Christ's charge to his disciples as represented by validly ordained Catholic priests. The grace at the confessional now made to encompass this, by the authority of the Church, under scriptural guidance is indeed a welcome development.

NO ONE CAN FORGIVE OR ABSOLVE ANY MAN OF SIN EXCEPT OUR GOD THE FATHER IN HEAVEN AND OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. NOT THE POPE, NOT ANY PRIESTS, NOBODY! IN THE SAME WAY NO ONE CAN COME TO OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN EXCEPT THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. IT IS WRITTEN IN BLACK AND WHITE IN THE BIBLE. MY DEAR PEOPLE PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE BIBLE. FORGET THE DOCTRINES OF MEN! THE WORD OF GOD IS THE TRUTH AND IT IS LIFE. NO MAN CAN FORGIVE ANY MAN THEIR SINS! MAY GOD GRANT US MERCY AND GRACE TO FOLLOW HIM.

Doris I completely understand where you are coming from...it has never been an easy thing understanding some catholic doctrines, but so far everything I believe in as a catholic is duly represented in my bible and it works for me...that is perfect. I feel understanding the mysteries of Christ and the church is beyond human comprehension, it's really by faith...like when Jesus whom the disciples still saw as a human told them to eat his body and drink his blood- john 6 vs 53-61. Their reaction is quite like those of most of you here. But unfortunately, everything is not spelt out in a way humans understand, God's ways are not our ways...that is why most people question catholic doctrines because its not really quite like how most humans would prefer to practise their own form of Christianity, people prefer what they can understand.
Anyways, it depends on the individual. I feel it's completely stupid being in a religion and not believing in some of its doctrines. God will judge you according to what you believe in. If your priests cannot explain any catholic doctrines to your satisfaction, I will advice you leave the church to somewhere you can feel whole. I hope though you understand and feel as complete as I do anyways...lol. #muchlove#

The Pope is not playing God my friends. Open your minds. The Catholic church is the way it is today because it is the church Christ instituted and Christ has not allowed the gates of hell to overcome His Church! There are so many things that the priests do in 'persona Christi', that is on behalf of Christ, and it is all scriptural, when we Catholics go for confession, the actual person giving absolution is Christ, through the priest. When we listen to the Gospel reading at Mass, the actual person giving us the word, is Christ, again in the person of the priest or deacon ; and that is why we stand during the gospel reading , in reverence. There are other examples too. And yes Jesus himself gave his apostles the power and authority to forgive sins. Please go right now to the bible and read John 20:23. I am a convert to the Catholic Church from penticostalism. I had a million and one questions about the catholic faith in the beginning, but thank God for His enlightenment and guidance, I am now a proud Catholic. If you want to understand the faith better let me know and we can encourage each other.

According to the Catholic doctrine, normally during d sacrament of reconciliation(confession) the priest do not have the right to absolve those who have committed abortion from their sins, only bishops and Pope can do that. So, now the Pope is granting priests the right to do that. That doesn't mean God is not the one that forgives sins. I hope you understand now.

First of all, there are "Catholics" and there are "practising Catholics". It is among the former that you find ignorant Catholics. The Catholic Doctrines is no different from the biblical teachings. My advice to the ignorant Catholics is to walk up to a clergy and ask questions where they are confused and also attend doctrinal classes. For the "non Catholics", it's either they convert (before they can even understand the "C" in Catholicism) or keep their opinions in their hearts (before they attract curses upon themseles).

I am not surprised that so many people here both Christians do not know the teachings of Christ, even those clearly stated are in the Bible are being denied. A lot of people here like the Jews of Jesus' time are saying how can this man forgive sins, forgetting that Jesus who is God Incarnate gave the power to forgive sin to His Apostles who today are represented by the Ordained Catholic Priest. This power is not given to all. The priest stands in the place of God to offer prayers and intercession on our behalf and welcomes us back to the community of God when we stray. If the priest can baptised someone and make someone a child of God, what is the problem in absolving one from sin in the name of God. Go and read your Bible very well and if don't understand ask a Catholic Priest.

Anonymous said...

Yes indeed the word of God is deep that is why you should stop giving it your human interpretation and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide you and not a self-proclaimed "Holy "Father" called the Pope. I pray that you find the Spirit of God and that you enjoy His everlasting blessings and be free from the occultic practices of the Catholic Church.
