The 12 soldiers sentenced to death deserve to die - Ex-generals

While the rest of us are begging for leniency, some retired senior military officers say the 12 soldiers sentenced to death last week for attacking their GOC at their barracks in Maiduguri, deserve to die.

Speaking with Sunday Punch, the ex-generals said it's necessary for the military to maintain its age-long rules on discipline, hailed the judgement and said it must be carried out. A former Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Brig.-Gen. Williams Obene (retd.), said,
“I commend the boldness of the Army authorities to follow the terms and conditions of service – the extant laws that established the armed forces, particularly the Army– and for trying to uphold discipline at the highest level. When politicians and highly influential Nigerians interfere in the daily administration of the military, things become difficult. That situation is very prevalent under democracy.”

A former Adjutant-General of the Nigerian Army, Major General David Jemibewon (retd.), said
“The military does not operate on sentiments or on people expressing either sympathy or lack of sympathy. Most of the things (we do) in the military are based on laws. It is difficult for me to align with people calling for clemency or pardon. The court martial has the facts and they have now come to conclusion after allowing evidence.”
Retired Colonel Anthony Nyiam also hailed the judgment, saying
“As a soldier, and respecter of the law and tradition, the worst thing a soldier can do is to mutiny. And the penalty, as the law says, should be served. If you interrupt the traditions of the military, you’re interfering with the foundations.”
Former military administrator of Bauchi and Osun states, Col. Theophilus Bamigboye (retd.), backed the sentence, saying
"The court has followed the laid down procedure and military etiquette. They (the court) must have looked at the entire situations before arriving at the sentence. We have our own laws and so many things regulating our conduct in the military. I will not want anybody to die but we are talking of military procedure, which has to be followed.”
If all these people are backing their death sentence then there may not be hope for these soldiers. But I pray it isn't so because that will be so sad. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army says it's waiting for the approval of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, on the death sentence given to the soldiers.

This is standard military code of justice. If you are in the military you would understand, MUTINY is even worse Dan terrorism. And d punishment for mutiny had always been death, that is military law, applicable in all countries. That's why foreign forces can't intervene, but in Nigeria we want to bring politics and sentiments into every thing. If this soldiers are pardoned today, what will happen in another Mutiny arises tomorrow. Nigerians please let's stop the sentiment and follow the law. No one, condition, or situation is above the law.

Linda you can't expect these generals not to back the sentence. They don't want to look like cowards before the people.Plus they know they are no longer should the junior khaki boys decide to mutiny. These generals are talking about rules, what about rules concerning betrayal and corruptio? Ofcourse I don't expect them to look at that angle coz they are all guilty of that. All I can say is,Nigeria is about to witness the greatest revolution of all times should tese soldiers be killed.Talks and tete-a-tetes have been going on in the camps of junior ranking officers and believe me terrorism is about to witness different angles to it.Call lit guerilla warfare, insurgency, terrorism or whatever

I believe they knew these rules on discipline before they became full-fledged military men, so let them face the music. If only some of our reckless politicians can be made to dance this way to the constitution...

Anonymous said...

In as much as we are emotional about this,we must also be rationally involved. These soldiers flouted the ''highest'' order of discipline, and displaced their oath of office in such ridiculous attempt. The consequences of their action must be binding of what the military law says to forestall a future occurence. If it where to be china, japan or korea, they would be beheaded.

Wicked people in a wicked world. U want to kill poor soldiers who revolted for their fellow soldiers bn thrown to BH to be killed. Is this what u are suppose to be judging? Souls are dying yet u want to kill more! May God safe your souls.

Unknown said...

These people are begging for a revolution and they might soon get it. Opening their filthy mouths to talk about the law running it's course when those at the top are the biggest criminals. If those soldiers must die then so must all the corrupt senior military officers. This is hypocrisy at its peak.

I really don't see how this is a big deal, the army has thei own rules n regulations onlike civilians the soldiers knew what they signed up for before becoming soldiers ,they should have been ready the minute they even thought of firing @ their GOC .

It was civilian interference in military affairs that got us in this ugly situation in the first place. The military is different, it has to be to keep the country one and secure. Those that take the decidion to join must meet and maintain the standards of discipline and conduct. Punishments like this are necessary to keep the military in the place it must be. Linda please keep your pleas to yourself. This is a matter of national survival, not entertainment. People like these compromise our national security and our most important institution. They must die!

When the so called Generals were interfering in disrupting democracy and becoming politicians they did not break code. When Generals were prostrating for a Major that one is tactical disrespect. The country need to do right at all time and not pick and choose.

Before the soldiers embarked on the shameful act, they knew it was a grievous offence and punishable by their laws. It's what they signed for. Can we please stop getting sentimental. If this is not curbed, one day, these same soldiers would pick up guns and kill people at random. It's starts by disrespecting a senior officer and before you know it they are out there constituting a menace. Mutiny in the military is unacceptable! I think people need to get acquainted with the laws in the military to understand this.

Hmmm...it's quite a pity, it breaks my heart to know that humans can condemn fellow humans to death without a thought. At the same time it beats me wen people deviate from their stipulated code of conduct as in this case. I only just wish a miracle could happen to avert the death of these gentle men and not create an impression in the hearts of other soldiers that mutiny could be pardoned. It' is seen as a hard decision as the Nigerian Army would never want to see the pride and discipline which bounds them be ridiculed but at the same time "to err is human but forgiveness is divine".
Killing them would seem like they still hold their discipline and conduct to high esteem....
But think about it carefully...."they kill people that kill people, to show people that killing people is wrong ".
May God have mercy on our souls..

Its only God dats met to take 1's life and not man,its so sad.

Mutiny is the gravest of all crimes in the most disciplined institution in the world (Army).

If this happens anywhere in the world, they would also be deadmen. All you sentimental "bloody" civilians should hush. Those guys actually signed their death warrant before joining the Army.

When these guys were employed their condition of employment was to do what their boss ask them to do first wrong or right without asking questions. I repeat, these are Soldiers signed off to the most open and deadly cult world over "The Army", they are not mere civilians like US

We are know thats the rule in the millitary, but why did all these useless generals kept quiet when them Diya, Adisa and co were pardoned and released for coup.Maybe u can tell us the punishment for coup that is different from what we all know.Bcos these ones are rats in the army.Law is only applicable to the less priviledged in Nigeria.May God help us.

franco said...

Retired Colonel Anthony Nyiam also hailed the judgment...I can't believe Col Nyiam supporting the execution...look at who is talking
As a soldier, and respecter of the law and tradition, the worst thing a soldier can do is to be a coup plotter....Nyiam was involved in a military coup years ago and he got pardoned...people forget their past so easily

Does anybody remember the history surrounding Major Kaduna Nzegwu? Let us make a critical analysis of that history.
For the politicians, 2015 is election year. They must apply caution for those who ignore history, may repeat the same mistakes.

Unknown said...

Please, does anybody remember the history surrounding Major -General Aguyi Ironsi and Major Kaduna Nzegwu? The Army Act was in the main drafted by the British.
Let also apply extreme caution in this matter.

I respect their rule & regulation but this people shouldn't act as if they own the world. This deals with human life & also defender of our dear nation.

If that is the case there will be no body going for an army recruitment again is it by force. U check am the same country u pledge to is prosecuting you. Damn mutiny

They can't fight boko haram, but they can kill innocent soldiers who were standing up for their rights ? If they don't want them anymore, they should dismiss them from the military and stop setting a bad example where no one will want to join the military anymore. cowards!!!

With this your english...they will kill them, pls stop your grammer...it will put them in more trouble!

Please sentence them to life imprisonment. Are any of you without sin? We are all human, please have mercy on them.

All the people playing sentiments here, your head is not correct. This is military law and we civilians don't have to interfere. Those soldiers know the consequences and still go ahead for mutiny, they have to face the music. This is all about military law, no more, no less. benotekcomputers@gmail.com
